This photo, taken from Birch Point on the north end of Isle au Haut, shows the amount of ice accumulated in the bay. The ice extends from here to the southern end of Merchant's Island, seen in the center of the photo.

Stonington (the nearest town on the mainland) has its own ice problems this year and without a period of slightly warmer temps and a bit of wind to break things up, there is the distinct possibility of our ice pack meeting theirs, leaving the bay frozen all the way across and making trips to the mainland all but impossible.
