The thoroughfare between Isle au
Haut and Kimball island to the west is the mooring spot
for many of the island lobstermen's boats. Seen here are
Handsome (left) and Geneva Sue (right). A thick shroud
of morning fog was lifting as this photo was taken; ten
minutes earlier the boats were barely visible.
The traditional Maine lobster
boat is a beautiful vessel. The gentle upward sweep of
the bow, the clean lines of the foredeck, cabin and stern
make an unmistakable profile. They are quite perfectly
suited to their task, and the design of these boats hasn't
seen a lot of change in many decades.
