If there is anything resembling
a central hub of the Isle au Haut community, it is probably
the general store. In the 19th century, there were several
stores on the island, operating at Moore's Harbor near
the old lobster cannery, at Rich's Cove and at various
other locations. In 1910, John K. Barter fulfilled the
function of the island's storekeeper, operating from a
small building in the middle of town. That building was
the island's only general store until 1971 when it was
replaced by a market up the road, run by Russ and Jean
Devereux.
The original store was still used by Pat Tully as a propane,
kerosene and gasoline concession when the Devereux' "Mountainside
Market" was in operation. When they closed up shop,
the store was returned to the original building under
the ownership of the Tully family who had purchased it
from the Barters in the 1950s. The new store is built-on
to the old one, the original serving as office/storage
space for the store's latest incarnation.
