Long Pond, on the east side of Isle au Haut. This approximately mile-long pond (hence the name) is a source of entertainment and recreation both summer and winter. Sailing, kayaking, swimming, and fishing (brook trout 18 inches or better are sometimes caught here) are the summer pastimes; skating and ice fishing take over in winter. This photo was taken in late January after a few good snowfalls and a long stretch of cold temperatures. At the time of this photo, the ice was about eight to ten inches thick, covered with about a foot of snow.
