Lumpfish

 About this photo:

Lumpfish are common in the waters around Isle au Haut and are frequently found in lobster traps. They attach themselves to ropes in the water (such as potwarp, mooring lines, etc.) via a sucker disk on their underside (see photo at right) and feed on the small marine organisms that grow there. Lumpfish look oddly tropical and are brightly colored; females are light blue/green and males turn bright red during the breeding season. The skin of the lumpfish is tough, leathery and abrasive. This specimen was about 9 inches in length; smaller lumpfish (2 to 5 inches) are far more commonly found in traps.
