Old Cove, formerly known as Rich's Cove, lies just north of what is now known as Rich's Cove on Isle au Haut. This cove was the site of ancient feasts and tribal gatherings of the indians who came to this island many centuries before it was first seen by white Europeans. Although it is difficult to discern in this photo, the white area in front of the large rock is what remains of a large mound of shells left by the indians. The shells are now reduced to small fragments; the age of the shell mound is reported to date back several thousand years.
