About this photo

This fisherman's shack is located at the northern end of the thoroughfare between Isle au Haut and Kimball Island. The pleasant sprawl of useful items around the shack speaks volumes about island life: "...might need this someday". In such a remote location, the aquisition of new items can be a difficult, time-consuming and costly proposition. Consequently, islanders are accustomed to and very adept at getting every last ounce of use from the materials at hand.

One other note of interest, the buoys that hang from the side of this shed are made of Maine spruce, not as common a sight as they were 15 or 20 years ago. The majority of lobster buoys these days are made of polystyrene. When I first took note of this on my return to the island in 1997 after an excruciatingly prolonged absence, I was saddened. Although time moves slowly on Isle au Haut, it does not, as I had once imagined, stand still.
