This photo was taken as my wife and I returned to Stonington from Isle au Haut after our all-too-brief visit in the summer of 1997. The mailboat has, for as long as I can remember, served as something of a lifeline between the island and the main. The boat makes three trips a day in the summer months, carrying tourists from Stonington to the island and back, a journey of about 7 miles each way. The first stop on arrival at the island is usually the town dock on the thoroughfare, although I recall the boat also making a stop at a private dock on "the point" on several occaisions. The boat then continues to Duck Harbor on the southern end of the island which, being a part of Acadia National Park, is where most of the day-trippers disembark. The mailboat is owned and operated by the Isle au Haut Company, whose site has an excellent (17k) photo of the Miss Lizzie on the entrance page. This photo was taken at about 6:00 pm EST, July 1997 by Kath Slawson |

Update- 10/00: As promised, we've done a major update and renovation of this site. The upgrade is so comprehensive as to have outgrown this small space. Our new site is available at http://www.isleauhaut.net. See you there! |
