About this photo

This photo was taken from the top of Mount Champlain. The view is westward, across Kimball Island and a number of the other small islands that populate Penobscot Bay. The mainland is visible some seven miles distant.

At approximately 550 feet, Mount Champlain is the highest peak of the ridge which runs most of the length of the island. This is not terribly formidable by most people's standards or even extraordinarily high for this part of the Maine coast.

On approach by boat, the sight of this little island rising out of the glacier-carved formation of peaks and valleys that is Penobscot Bay is no more splendid or remarkable than other views of the many islands along the coast, but it never fails to inspire a sense of awe and wonder in those who know the island and the treasures that it holds.
