The vessel in the background is what my family used to refer to as a "windjammer". I am not well acquainted with nautical terminology, so I can't say that this is necessarily the most accurate term (I suspect that "windjammer" is sort of catch-all, used to refer to any large boat with sails). This sort of vessel is a common sight in the thoroughfare in summer when many such boats are cruising the Maine coast. While a poor soul such as myself can just barely conceive of the kind of financial resources one would need in order to acquire and maintain such a boat, I've always liked them. There is a certain quiet grace about a vessel that slips through the ocean under the power of sail. This photo was taken at about 2:00 pm EST, July 1997 by Jennifer Hughes |
