Abandoned cars and sheds are not an uncommon sight on Isle au Haut. The logistics involved with disposing of an unwanted vehicle are nearly insurmountable (or at least costly). There is another reason, though, for allowing old cars to slowly return to the earth from whence they came: parts.
In such a remote location as the island, it can be difficult to acquire parts for vehicles. The island roads being a bit rough, cars do have a tendency to need repair often. On many occasions, a needed part is more readily obtained from a rusting hulk than it would be from a dealer on the mainland. More about island cars
The shed in this photo is not entirely abandoned; it still serves as storage for someone's cache of building materials.
