This photo was taken at the Isle au Haut Lobstermen's
Association lobster pound, near the north end of the island.
A percentage of the lobsters caught by island fishermen
is held here to be sold in the off-season when they bring
a better price from the distributor. Lobsters survive
with no trouble in the frigid island winter as long as
they remain in the water. Lobstering in extremely cold
weather can be an exercise in futility, though. When lobsters
are exposed to extremely cold air, they shoot their
claws and die right on the washboard. A lobster with no
claws isn't worth much, and a dead lobster is worth
less than nothing.
The skiff in this photo is completely
surrounded by ice and probably won't be going anywhere
soon.
