Isle au Haut as seen from York
Island to the east. This photo depicts only a small part
of the northeastern end of Isle au Haut, from Rich's Cove
(left) to Old Cove. The naming of these coves is the source
of a certain amount of confusion, depending on which map
one uses. Old Cove was originally named Rich's Cove, the
place currently known as Rich's Cove
was formerly known as Douglas Cove.
York Island is also a place of
some interest. It currently boasts a total population
of one, and is privately owned by a former resident of
Isle au Haut. From the late 1800s through the 1930s, York
Island was home to a bustling fishing community, owing
in large part to it's proximity to the excellent fishing
waters of the narrows between the two islands, and to
the well-protected anchorage in its harbor.

York Island harbor at the turn
of the century
As recently as the 1970s, several of the buildings that
were in use during York Island's heyday were remarkably
well-preserved, although no one had really cared for them
for about 40 years. At present, there are some remnants
of these structures on York, although it is no longer
safe to enter them.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
TRESPASSING ON YORK ISLAND IS STRICTLY FORBIDDEN.
The island is private property and is posted as such.
Due to the recent advent of the island being inundated
with kayakers and pleasure boaters (many of whom have
demonstrated a most callous disregard for the privacy
of the island's resident), the owner of York Island will
no longer permit uninvited visitors.
